Is It Time To Repair Or Replace My Fence?

A high-quality fence that is properly taken care of can last for years. However, as with all things, there comes a time when that beloved fence of yours seems to be on its last legs. It may be from normal wear and tear or from external damage.

Whatever the case, deciding whether to repair or to replace your fence can put you in a tricky situation.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Fence

Your fence is most often the first line of defense when it comes to protecting your property, and it goes without saying that it needs to be in great shape. Here are a few signs that it’s time to replace your fence.

Discoloration

Inspect your fence for signs of discoloration. If the area you live in is quite rainy, you may begin to see yellow or gray-colored stains in your fence. If so, this is a clear indication that your fence is beginning to rot.

In more severe cases,  you might see a green fuzz growing on your fence. This means that your fence has mold growing on it. Unfortunately, once your fence has begun to rot, there is little that can be done to salvage it.

Damage

If your fence has sustained major damage from an accident or a natural disaster, it’s probably time to consider replacing your fence entirely. If you’ve had a car damage your fence or damage from a fallen tree, the structural damage to the fence may not easily be repaired.

Attempting to repair the fence may cause you to spend more money than it would be to simply replace the fence entirely. Investing in a newer, stronger fence is a much better choice in the long run.

State of the Hardware

Take a close look at all the elements of your fence to determine that they are performing as they should be. If you have a wooden fence, examine the boards to see if any are split or missing. If you have one or two boards that are split, these can easily be replaced.

However, if several boards are split or missing, it’s time for a new fence. Not only do these damaged boards reduce the effectiveness of your fence, but they also ruin the look and aesthetic of the fence as well.
